Justice C. Shannon Bacon serves on the New Mexico Supreme Court. Shannon has dedicated her career to working for New Mexican families, spending nearly the past decade in public service as a District Court Judge at the Second Judicial District. Shannon was appointed by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham after being recommended by a nonpartisan Judicial Nominating Commission. She must now run in the 2020 Election to keep her seat on the NM Supreme Court.
Shannon served as the Presiding Judge in the Civil Division at the Second Judicial District Court. Shannon presided over thousands of cases spanning complex civil litigation, class actions, adult guardianship and conservatorship cases, real estate and contract disputes, election issues, domestic and children's court cases and appeals. Shannon was also the Bernalillo County Water Judge and Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District Judge.
Additionally, Shannon has served the community on numerous commissions and committees. She served on the New Mexico Supreme Court Adult Guardianship and Conservatorship Steering Committee (Chair) and Rules Committee, the Access to Justice Commission, the Bernalillo County Pro Bono Committee (Co-chair), the Supreme Court Personnel Rules Committee (Chair), the Supreme Court Rules of Evidence Committee (Chair) and the District and Metropolitan Judges Association (President). She also has volunteered her personal time on several non-profit boards, including Casa Q, Cuidando Los Ninos, Southwest Women’s Law Center, Emerge New Mexico and the Albuquerque Community Foundation. Shannon has dedicated much of her volunteer work to address the needs of youth experiencing homelessness.
Prior to becoming a District Court Judge in 2010, Shannon was a partner at Sutin, Thayer and Brown, P.A. and Eaves, Bardacke, Baugh, Kierst and Larson, P.A. where her practice focused on complex litigation and appeals. She began her legal career as a law clerk for the Honorable A. Joseph Alarid at the New Mexico Court of Appeals.
Shannon grew up in Albuquerque’s North Valley. She earned a Bachelor's Degree in History and her law degree at Creighton University. Upon completion of her education, Shannon returned to Albuquerque, and has dedicated her career to helping New Mexico families and businesses. Shannon and her family are avid balloonists who have participated in the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta for over 40 years. She enjoys spending time with her family and friends, hiking, cycling, gardening and reading.
